INSTALLATION:
Welcome to ZMENU the ultimate in Controlled Menu
Environments. Before installing ZMENU you should make a
backup copy of the System disk. Since ZMENU is not copy
protected you can use the DOS 'DISKCOPY' command to
backup your system disk. For more information on
DISKCOPY refer to your DOS manual.
ZMENU has it's own install procedure located on the
system disk. The install procedure will create a
sub-directory on the specified hard-drive called 'MENU'.
This directory will contain all ZMENU files and programs
needed to run ZMENU. The install procedure will also
create or alter your autoexec.bat file in the root-
directory so ZMENU will execute on power-up.
To start the install, insert the ZMENU system disk
in drive A: of your computer, and at the A> prompt type
the command: INSTALL {enter key}
The install program will then display ZMENU's User
agreement which must be acknowledge before ZMENU can
operate. Next you will be prompted for use of the
installation defaults. Parameter required for
installation are as followed: 1) drive to load on. 2)
subdirectory to load in. 3) whether ZMENU will be
running in a single or multi-user mode.

The installation program will automatically create or
update you AUTOEXEC.BAT bootup batch file to execute ZMENU
on power up.
To run the ZMENU program from DOS, execute the MENU.BAT
batch file in the root-directory. This batch file will
load and run ZMENU.

which displays the menu heading (user definable), all
menu selections available for use, and all quick select
keys to the right of each menu selection.
The third window has three user definable lines for
comments (top two, bottom left), and the bottom right
line is reserved for Help key display and current user.
Note: There are more windows, but these are the three
main ones.
NOTE: To change system information see System Settings.

SELECTING MENU OPTIONS:
There are two ways to select a Menu Option. One is
the point and shoot method, where you simply move the
cursor to the menu option and press return. There are
two ways to move the cursor bar. One method is to press
the spacebar until the cursor highlights the option of
your choice. (Note: If the cursor goes past the bottom
of the menu it will wrap around to the first option)
Another way to move the cursor is to use the Up and Down
arrow keys.
The second way of selecting a Menu option is to use
the Quick Select key. The Quick Select key is the
letter to the left of each Menu option. Just press the
corresponding letter for the desired option.
Advance Key: The ZipQuick key permits quick access
to DOS. To invoke the ZipQuick key just press the 'Z'
key on the keyboard from the Menu option window. Access
to DOS through ZipQuick is protected by the same access
code used by the exit to DOS function.
Note: the 'Z' key is not displayed on the screen.

SYSTEM DATE:
The system date is displayed in the upper window in
the left corner. This date can be changed to reflect
the desired date. (It is limited by your machine's
system date only). To change the system date, press the
F9 key.
The Menu window will disappear and a small
date window will appear to the upper left of the screen.
Then type in a valid formatted date such as the example
below. Examples:
Valid dates 09/12/1986
08/22/84
9-9-86
Invalid dates 12/34/85
jan 8,86
091286
NOTE: If you enter an invalid date, an ERROR will occur.
See Error Messages.
It is important to remember that the ZMENU system
date is taken from the PC's internal clock. If the
computer does not have an internal clock or the date is
loaded incorrectly, then ZMENU will display the
incorrect date every time it is rebooted. To reset the
date loaded into the internal clock refer to you DOS
manual.

ADDING MENU OPTIONS:
To add menu options to the currently displayed menu
window, simply press the F3 key. A maximum of fifteen
selections are allowed per menu window. (NOTE: If more
options are needed, make one of your option a sub-menu.)
When the add menu option window appears, fill it out as
follows: Field (1) Menu description-this field will be
displayed in the Menu window when selecting menu
options. Field (2) Opt Access code-this field is
optional, and used when selecting menu option from the
window. If this field is filled in, ZMENU will prompt
the user to enter an access code to proceed.
The five lines at the bottom of the window are used
for dos commands that will execute the option. The
lines can be filled with actual Dos commands such as
Copy, Dir, Del...etc., and program names. You do not
have to fill in all five lines displayed, only those
necessary to execute your program. For more information
see your DOS Manual.
There are also special codes to use in the five
command lines: 1) The # is used for executing batch
files. 2) The & to allow the user to append an input to
the end of the command on the next line. 3) The @ tells
ZMENU to pause before returning to ZMENU. 4) The *
which tells ZMENU that it is a Sub-Menu and not a
program. 5) The ! which tells ZMENU to shell the
program selected.

Special Codes:
# ) The # sign is used only to execute a batch file.
Note the example:
[cd\.....................................]
will cause zmenu to return to the root
directory.
[#fastback...............................]
will tell the system to execute the
batch file fastback.
[........................................]
Remember-the # sign must be the first character on
the line.
& ) The & sign is used to allow input from the user to
be appended to the end of the command on the next
line.
Note the example:
[cd\....................................]
will cause zmenu to return to the root
directory.
[&Enter the file to delete ?............]
will prompt the user for a file to be
deleted which will then be appended to
the next command line.
[del....................................]
will delete the specified file.
[.......................................]
Whatever is entered by the user is added to
the end of the command 'del'. Remember-the & sign
must be the first character on the line.
12
BYTE/WIDE Software
Docs. Rev.2.6 December 21st, 1991
* ) The * sign is used to tell ZMENU to add a Sub-Menu
instead of a program option. When using the * sign
remember that it has to be on the first line of the
command lines and the first character of the
command line. As in the example below:
[Accounting Menu.......] [ACCOUNT.]
Menu name that will be access code
displayed on menu. for this menu.
[*ACCOUNT................................]
DOS file created by ZMENU
[........................................]
Note: the menu name must be a valid Dos file name.
For more information on Dos file names, refer to your
Dos Manual. You cannot use spaces in the name.
When you create a Sub-Menu, all Access codes will
default to 'PASSWORD'.
13
BYTE/WIDE Software
Docs. Rev.2.6 December 21st, 1991
@ ) The @ sign is used to tell ZMENU to pause after
your program ends, and before you return to ZMENU.
To use the @ sign just place it at the beginning
of line 5 of the command lines as the first
character in the line.
[Directory of drive A..] [........]
option title
[dir A:..................................]
DOS command that will give a directory
of floppy drive "A"
[........................................]
[........................................]
[........................................]
[@.......................................]
ZMENU command that will pause before
returning to ZMENU
14
BYTE/WIDE Software
Docs. Rev.2.6 December 21st, 1991
! ) The exclamation mark is used by the user to
indicate to ZMENU to shell a program. This permits
ZMENU to remain resident in memory while the
selected program is executed. It also allows for a
quicker return to ZMENU after program execution.
When using the ! sign remember that it has to be on
the first line of the command lines and the first
character of the command line. As in the example
below:
[Diskcopy..............] [........]
option title access code
[!\dos\Diskcopy a: a:....................]
tells ZMENU to execute the diskcopy
command located in the dos sub-directory.
(Note:pathing supported by Dos 3.0 or
higher only)
[........................................]
When using the shell option it is important to
remember that you cannot change to a different sub-
directory unless the change to another sub-
directory is made by a batch file. When using the
shell command ZMENU allows you to execute batch
files located only in the ZMENU sub-directory.
NOTE: ZMENU cannot shell any Interpreted or
Compiled BASIC programs....
Normal setup to run any program on the harddrive.
[Lotus spreadsheet.....] [lotus...]
option title access code
[cd\lotus................................]
change to Lotus subdirectory
[lotus...................................]
runs Lotus 1-2-3 program
[........................................]
